Can I return to an earlier version of Firefox? Some of the software I use when browsing (Olive software for loading a digital newspaper) has to preload lots of data in order to function. In the new version (V 24.0) of Firefox, it always gets hung up at 39% and I never actually get to see the newspaper at all. Alternatively, does someone recognize what might cause the loading to hang up and how to get around the problem?

The Firefox default home page is an internally generated page which has the fictitious address about:home

Earlier versions of Firefox are all available, but for security reasons, it's probably worth troubleshooting Firefox 24 a bit first.

Updates

Have you checked for any add-on updates that developers might have issued for improved compatibility? For extensions:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > "gear" button > Check for Updates

This might only check extensions downloaded from the Mozilla add-on site; for other software, you may need to check the publisher's website.

Flash

Since the Olive Software application is Flash-based, you may want to try some standard guidance that addresses the most common reasons for Flash problems in Firefox. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) If you have installed any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media, make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them temporarily.

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)

See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

I did learn a good deal about both Firefox and Flash in looking into the first of the suggestions. Disabling the use of hardware acceleration in both places didn't fix the problem, but a helpful L.A.Times Consumer Services email did suggest increasing the amount of cache available in Firefox (http://en.kioskea.net/faq/15018-firefox-increase-the-maximum-cache-size) and that got me past the loading problem.
