I have been told I am using an old version of Firefox which may be causing problems on certain sites. I cannot find out how to update it.

You appear to have the current Firefox 21.0. If some website says to install a small sized firefox setup exe file as a update, do not as it is ploy to infect you. Either do updates in Firefox Help menu or get it from Mozilla.org
