Have tried: - add-ons disabled - Better Privacy add-on - renaming places file to .old - running full virus scan (MS Security Essentials) - all Windows updates current

Chrome is OK This took forever to type -- it's like FF works for 10 seconds then hangs for 10 sec, and after every click. Sometimes fills in what I typed when it's hung up, but not always and not very much.

If it's not a network problem, you can also try a new profile. If it's okay, you can later copy the needed files from the old profile to this.

Hi,

Please also try disabling hardware acceleration in Tools (Alt + T) > Options > Advanced > General > Use hardware acceleration when available. Options > Advanced

Nope. Did that, closed FF, opened, same thing. I'm thinking I started complaining about what I thought was a really slow Internet connection a few weeks ago. But on home network, and other computer was not going slow.

overyonderfield, Do you have adobe flash player and updated it recently? From how long has been the problem being lying?

I have something called Adobe air app installer, as of January this year. Can that cause problems? I can't find an Adobe flash player on my computer (although I have Adobe CS5, which includes Flash). FF addon is Shockwave flash, but I tried disabling addons.

Does the profile get corrupted somehow? Just curious why that's suspect in this hangup/hiccup problem. I would want to reload most of the important files .

Try disable Plugins one by one and then test. Maybe its Flash issue, I got the same prob as you But its seldom. I had figure it out its Adobe flash issue.

You can also try to Disable suspect Plugins in Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons. The Firefox profile folder, files and settings can get corrupt. A new profile would have the default Firefox settings and wouldn't usually have any add-ons or settings changes made by add-ons.

Did you try a new profile?

You haven't confirmed that.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

See:

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Before trying a new Profile, I set myself up for a long haul, creating backups and making sure I could access everything through Chrome -- then I discovered how simple a procedure it was -- just create a new one and open with the new one; see if it makes a difference. So far I'm going to say yes, it's the profile. Just in typing this reply there is a difference -- no hanging up. Big test was closing FF; with the problem it took a long time to act, but now it's normal. I will leave this open a day to test, but I'm guessing it's the Profile. So far I have copied back in the passwords, and it's still OK. Thanks, all.

Yes, tried the disabled add-ons initially. Not it. Seems to be the Profile.

FYI, this must have been a slow degradation -- I was blaming a slow Internet connection before the typing/scrolling trouble became an issue, but everything is zipping along with the new profile.

Do I delete the corrupted one named "default"? With that answer this thread can close.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. Yes, you can safely delete the previous profile once you are sure there's no personal data to be retrieved from that.
