I prefer not to have the Tab Bar showing unless I have more than one tab open, but I sometimes like to open a blank tab, so that I can open a link from an email into it. (Not the default for me.) Alas, ever since I upgraded to Firefox 7.0.1 from the version Fedora Linux gave me (3.6.x) I've been unable to get the New Tab button back. Not only can't I move the one on the Tab Bar to the Navigation Bar, it's not available under Customize. It is, however, available on the copy of Firefox 7.0.1 on my laptop, also running Fedora. I've tried running FF in Safe mode, I've backed up my local settings and had Safe mode set everything to default and restarted, with no change. I have Tab Mix Plus installed, but running FF without it doesn't change anything.

You seem to have tried the obvious things. Did you try restore default set on the customize toolbars option, whilst in safe mode ? ( Although the safe mode permanent change option reset toolbars and controls should have covered that )

Safe mode does not disable plugins, have you tried whilst in safe mode also

  • using only the default theme
  • disabling all plugins

I followed the instructions in your first link, but I don't have a user.js file, and in any event, the instructions there aren't really relevant. The problem isn't that Firefox doesn't remember this setting, it's that I can't set Firefox to put a New Tab button on my Navigation bar in the first place because it's not in the list of items I can select. And yes, I've tried restoring the default set several different times with no effect. I know that the button exists, because I can see it on the copy on my laptop, even after the upgrade. The only thing I haven't tried (maybe) is disabling all plugins, so I'll try that and report back.

OK, I started in Safe Mode, disabled everything I could an told it to continue. No change, just as I expected.

You need to drag the New Tab (+) button from the Tab bar on the Navigation Toolbar to have a new tab button.

If you do not see that button on the tab bar then click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window.
Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"

If the above didn't help then see:

I tried restoring the default set. Again. It didn't do anything this time that it didn't do the last three or four times I tried it. The first two links told me nothing I didn't already know and hadn't tried. Will try the last one and report back.

As Firefox was reopening, I remembered trying that exact fix before with no effect. And, it didn't do anything helpful this time, either. The New Tab button simply doesn't seem to exist on this computer. (I know it's not being caused by Tab Mix Plus, because I checked on its forum first and eliminated any possibility of that.)
