When I downloaded Firefox and made it my search engine I lost my favorites with many sites I liked to go to, they are not in bookmarks. In fact I lost my whole tool bar and I checked the area that asked if I wanted it transferred. If I cannot get it back want to go back to Internet Explorer as my default but keep Firefox as an additional search engine. I hope you can help me one way or the other! So far, not too happy with this!

It should've imported your Internet Explorer favorites when you installed Firefox and put them into a folder named 'Imported IE Favorites' but if not you can try the following:

  • Try clicking on the Bookmarks button in Firefox (either from the toolbar or from the orange button on the top left)
  • Within that menu click 'Show all bookmarks'
  • On the top line of the box that pops up should be an Import & Backup button, click that & choose Import HTML
  • From the box that pops up make sure to check off Internet Explorer and let it do its thing
  • They should now be in the 'Imported IE favorites' I mentioned earlier

If that still doesn't work you may need to export the file from within Internet Explorer (IE).

  • To do that open IE & click on Favorites
  • At the top of the Favorites dropdown should say 'Add to Favorites' just to the right of that is a little down arrow, click that & choose 'Import/Export'
  • In that box choose 'export to a file' & Next
  • Choose 'Favorites' then Next
  • Click 'Favorites' at the top of that box & Next
  • Next you have to save the file it's going to make. I suggest clicking the Browse button & choosing your Desktop for ease of use & click Export
  • There should now be a file on your desktop named bookmark.htm
  • As long as that file is there go back to Firefox, Bookmarks, show all bookmarks, Import & Backup from earlier.
  • Again choose Import from HTML but this time choose from HTML file. In the box that pops up direct it to your desktop & choose the bookmark.htm you just made from IE & choose next.
  • Bookmarks from IE now in Firefox

Also just to clarify, Firefox is a web browser, not a search engine, 2 different things.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about the problem you are having.

  • Can you confirm that you installed Firefox and did not upgrade (from 4.0 to 5.0 etc.)?
  • What browser are you importing said favorites from?

Yes I just downloaded it but I have solved my problem as I found IE and can now use either and my favorites bar is on that one, though I would like the same tool bar on both if possible.

As long as I am here why if I want to x out of a page it does not give you the option of just leaving that page instead it just goes out of everything and your back at the desktop and have to start all over, a real pain!

Hello again, Not quite sure I understand your problem with pages. Could you try explaining it again? Thanks.

when I go to the top right of page where it shows the dash and the box and then the x. When I click on the x a box pops up that says you are about to close 2 tabs but there is no option to close just one. Although as I sit at this computer (been here all day trying to figure out things) I think I have once again solved my problem. I see on the left where there are 2 tabs open and I guess I just click on the one I want to close out of. Am going to if that works now as I leave this site. Thanks for your help.

To close one tab, you click on the 'x' that is next to tab itself, not the 'x' at the top right hand corner as that closes Firefox (as you know). I have attached a screen to show this.
