I've been looking at addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/

It looks very much as if the comments have been flooded with self-promoting entries. This looks like an effort to swamp out anything negative.

I note that a Google search has also been flooded with what looks like self-advertisting, in the same way.

Is it some kind of scam or spyware?

Can you do more to stop the flood of self-aggrandisement? I might suggest splitting comments into pro/anti/neutral.

The Add-ons forum is over here:

I do not know about the comments it has received, but to be hosted on the Mozilla add-ons site it will have undergone a review of the code and features by Mozilla, this particular add-on would have undergone a full review. For details about the review process see https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/developers/docs/policies/reviews

If you do not want to use that one, there are many other video download add-ons available.
