Why does the window border change frequently?

The left and right borders of the Firefox 4 window have a stylized look that includes a gradient. For some reason as I browse, this gradient changes its location frequently. It's very annoying. See this video for an example. Note that this is not Windows Aero as the video shows I was using Firefox against a blank background. While a similar gradient appears in all of my other applications, the gradient remains in a fixed location.

Please click the arrow in the Firefox button top left and go to Add-ons.

Next, disable the following plugins:

  • Java console 6.0.16
  • Java console 6.0.17
  • Java console 6.0.19
  • Java console 6.0.20
  • Java console 6.0.21
  • Java console 6.0.22
  • Java console 6.0.23

The only Java plugins you need to have installed are the ones you see in the screenshot. You should uninstall the above versions via Windows Add/Remove programs since they pose a security risk.

If the problem persists, update your graphics card drivers. The drivers you have installed at the moment date from 2009. Download from http://www.nvidia.com/ Uninstall the existing drivers before you update.

Do you have a Persona installed? Some of those are animated. Try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions without the animation in that configuration, then one of your add-ons, or a theme you have installed is the culprit. I have the very same problem.

Only Java console 6.0.24 activated. Graphics card drivers up to date (ATI). No persona installed.

I can still reproduce the problem in safe mode, by hitting the F5 button (on any web site). Or simply by bringing my mouse over links!

Do you have this add-on installed perhaps? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/safe/

You can find Add-ons by clicking the orange Firefox button, go to Add-ons and then click Extensions.

Thank you for your answer.

Add-ons currently installed :

  • AdBlock Plus 1.3.6
  • Session Manager 0.75
  • Java Console 6.0.24
  • WebMail Manager 2.7.7

And the problem can be reproduced in safe-mode anyway.

Edit : I made the problem disappear by deactivating the navigation bar. I'm assuming that the gradient is calculated without it and then updated after some event takes place. Or something like that.

There are a few Personas which include animations. You could try reloading the default theme via Add-ons | Appearance to determine whether that makes any difference or not.

Like I said in my first message, I have no persona installed.
