On a Mac, how do you select some text on a web page then copy to clipboard AS PLAIN TEXT?

This problem has annoyed me for YEARS, so I'm certain there's something I just don't know.

The worst case is when you view a Google cached page which highlights all your search words with a range of colors. You select some text there, Cmd-C, then paste into Textedit and there it is, the pasted text is a flippin' rainbow! Also, although the web page may use a decently legible font, it invariable pastes in some wretched serif'd font.

Nothing I do to Textedit Prefs, or FF userChrome etc seems to affect this. Aaaarrrgggh!
