A bookmark title can no longer be edited, or parts of it deleted, in the small black dialogue window that appears when creating a new bookmark. This has happened since a recent update July 2010 version 3.6.7 or 3.6.8

The problem seems not with histories or databases (prefs) but with brand new bookmarks which I am trying to edit before creating them in the small black 'Bookmark This Page'/'Page Bookmarked' dialogue window. Curiously I can affect the title field with key strokes but the cursor and mouse are ineffectual when trying to insert into, or select parts of, the bookmark title field. You can see in the enclosed screenshot that mousing over this field, the cursor arrow doesn't change to a text insertion symbol, as I believe it should. Many thanks, Jon

I have the same problem after upgrading Firefox to 3.6.8. I´m running a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.4. Can´t change the bookmark´s name with the cursor, only able to delete the complete bookmark name and type it manually.

I also cannot insert cursor to edit new bookmark title. Mac 10.5.4, Firefox 3.6.8.

Can you edit the bookmark if you close that pop-up and open the 'Edit This Bookmark" dialog with a click on the blue star in the location bar?

No, same problem with that pop-up - mouse and cursor cannot select or enter the text field.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes). See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears. You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions. You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

I have the same problem as mentioned above. I disabled all the add-ons, restarted Firefox, but it did not solve the issue.

This is giving me flashbacks to 1995 - scrabbling around in Extensions folders and multiple restarts. My guess is there's something amiss in the 3.6.8 (or 3.6.7) upgrade, for Macs at least. Perhaps it was just one upgrade too far.

I have the same problem being discussed above. I can't change the bookmark's name with the cursor and have to use the keyboard to delete before typing. Good to know I'm not the only one having this issue as I was close to going nuts.

Here are the steps to modify titles to Firefox bookmarks for Mac OS.

  1. Go to View > Sidebar > Bookmarks. Or enter Command+Shift+S.
  2. Your bookmarks folder appears on the left hand side of the Firefox window.
  3. Highlight a bookmark that you want to change.
  4. Enter Control+Command and then push cursor.
  5. A pop-up emerges. Select "Properties." (Note you can also select "Delete.")
  6. A window emerges that shows the properties of that bookmark. Here you can make all the changes to it that you like including its title.

That's it. Good luck.

I'm on a 24" early 2008 iMac 3.06 GHz with 10.6.4 Snow Leopard running Firefox version 3.6.10 and have been having the same problem as everyone else here through a succession of Firefox updates.

I can only click/place my cursor once in the "add a bookmark" window whether I open it by key command (CMD + D) or click the blue start icon in the URL bar. Sometimes I can't even insert my cursor once and the entire original name sits there mocking me all highlighted in blue. I can hit delete on my keyboard to get rid of the text or arrow left/right with the arrow keys to navigate around, but clicking more than once does nothing as if I'm not even clicking. I can't select specific words or text to delete and I can't even move the cursor to another location within the "add a bookmark/page bookmarked" window. I bookmark stuff all the time and this bug is pissing me off.

PS> I don't want to open up the bookmarks sidebar. I want to edit the name within the 'add a bookmark' / CMD + D window like an adult.

Does anyone have a fix yet?

I have the same problem. It occurred 2 or 3 upgrades ago. Before that I could easily change the name of a bookmark within the dialog box. I now have to delete it entirely and then write in what I want. Needless to tell all of you, it's annoying! I'm running an imac 24 inch with 10.64 and the latest firefox 3.6.11. Does anyone troll this site and tell the powers that be? Obviously we'd all like this fixed and it's not an isolated problem.

Cause Found (apparent bug in theme). I have Firefox 3.6.12 with the Walnut theme 1.8.66 (by alfredkeyser) installed. I found that by swiching back to the Firefox default theme the problem of editing the bookmark text box goes away. When I reinstall the Walnut theme, the problems exists again. We need to file reports of this by emailing the theme developer thru the Firefox add-ons (theme) site, for that particular theme. Don't post the problem on there,, Email him directly instead. There is a link on the sidebar to do that. See: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/122/

PS: I'm also wondering if we all are running the Walnut theme, or if this a problem specific to particular themes?!

Sorry, but I don't have any themes and I have this problem. I have several addons: bookmarks menu tool button, firefox PDF plugin, Get mail, searchbar autosizer, and smart bookmarks bar. It's weird that your problem goes away in the default theme, but I still have the problem. Any other ideas anyone?

The numbers are climbing weekly. Does anyone know where to post this so that someone sees it?

When you are speaking of editing, do you mean to be able to Cut, Copy, Paste & Delete all of the text in the Name Bar?

Perhaps it is something as simple as the following: See image...

baloudog,

Add-on themes can be the cause of various UI glitches, but some extensions can cause similar problems.

Start with some basic troubleshooting, try the Firefox SafeMode and see if that problem is gone.
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode
Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."

If it works properly while in the Firefox SafeMode, one of your add-ons / extensions is causing that problem. Disable your extensions one at a time until you find the culprit.

Thank you so much for responding. I did as you suggested and tried to edit a bookmark name while in safe mode--same problem. I can only delete the name completely and then type in a new one. I'm not able to just shorten or edit within the name that's entered in the box from the site.
