Can't receive email with btconnect
Hi Guys, I wonder if you can help . I have had Monzilla Thunderbird App for some while , primarily used for email, and access to my email account with Microsoft and has always been a bit of a pain to say the least. That I fear is because it was never set up properly by myself in the first place.
However, at the moment I can't receive any email from my PC ......."[email protected] " unless I sign in via a webpage. However, access via my smartphone using supplied Outlook email app, no problem.
So I am hopeful that you guys can help me sort out my PC access once and for all.
The current problem has arisen after receiving a forced donation / subscription page from Mozilla having made my donation I still do not have access to my email and folders.
Brief history: i. Originally PC access to account via Monzilla working fine, (donations made at intervals to Monzilla). ii. Microsoft then changed security systems and servers and with current setup at the time I couldn't get access to email incoming or outgoing ( problem with Imap / PoP3 servers). iii. Fix provided by Monzilla with new account denoted as .... [email protected] (OWL) whatever OWL stands for I do not know, (annual subscription required). iv. Even with the use of this get around , I still had problems sending mail this I believe was a problem down to default passwords and old server settings. (confliction between default settings and original account settings and use of OWL ? ). v. As mentioned above the current problem has arisen after receiving a forced donation / subscription page from Mozilla having made my donation I still do not have access to my email. problem with server settings again. Don't know what's going on ? and I am thoroughly confused and would appreciate some help getting things back on track. Just in case I have some difficulty accessing this platform and this forum / help page it would be much appreciated if any help could also be sent to the following email addresses [email protected] and [email protected] Many thanks

Hi Wayne, Thank you very much for your response, comments noted and actioned. Unfortunately, the Add On didn't work. Dialogue message returned as mail server for [email protected] user "Authenticated but not Connected" So I am still not able to receive email or send via Thunderbird. Any other thoughts on options to resolve would be much appreciated.
This problem I believe has been brought about due to further changes made to Microsoft server. It would seem that they are slowly migrating users over to new IMAP server settings, with a view to getting everybody switched over by 31-12-2024, at the same time they no longer appear to be supporting third party apps such as Thunderbird. No doubt in an attempt to try and persuade people to use their own new Microsoft Outlook App. Any further help or assistance that you are able to provide would be much appreciated.
You need to use the settings that Microsoft state.
Lets start off by you posting info so we know the current status.
In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information Scroll down to 'Mail and News Accounts' Copy all the data and paste it into this forum question.
AS a heads up Microsoft/outlook/hotmail accounts work perfectly ok in Thunderbird providing you use the correct settings. It's not just server settings Authentication Method that now uses oauth, you also need to check the primary email address is correct.
In Microsoft account - logon to account via a browser. you need to make sure the primary email address is the same one used for the SMTP in Thunderbird otherwise it will not allow sending.
Hi there, thank you for your response. Thunderbirds automatically detected the server settings for my Microsoft email account upon installation, and these have been copy/pasted from Thunderbird troubleshooting section "Mail & New Accounts" for your information.
Mail and News Accounts ID Incoming server Outgoing servers Name Connection security Authentication method Name Connection security Authentication method Default? account2 (none) Local Folders None Normal password account5 (imap) outlook.office365.com:993 SSL/TLS OAuth2 smtp.office365.com:587 STARTTLS OAuth2 true
The above table hasn't reproduced very well but I hope you can make sense of it. Not sure what account2 refers to but the correct server settings appear to be listed under account5 , (why account5 I don't know ??? ).
Comments noted with regard to Microsoft Account and will get back to you more fully on this shortly, but other devices using outlook app for mail, (smart phone, laptop, tablet etc), appear to work OK using the above settings.
Hope this helps.
Many thanks for your help and assistance.
re :donations made at intervals to Monzilla
Please note there is a difference between donating to Mozilla and to Thunderbird. This is for Thunderbird : https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/donate/ You can always get the link via Thunderbird - eg: Help > About Thunderbird It has a text link 'Make a donation' - click on it to get correct website.
re :why account5 I don't know ??? ) You previously created mail accounts and then deleted them. Account 2 is for the default 'Local Folders' account.
re account5 (imap) outlook.office365.com:993 SSL/TLS OAuth2 smtp.office365.com:587 STARTTLS OAuth2 true
All of that seems correct - I was expecting more than one account because you mentioned btconnect and hotmail.
Also check you have this set up:
- Settings > Privacy & Security
- CHECK “Accept cookies from sites”
- Accept third-party cookies: ALWAYS
- Keep until: THEY EXPIRE
IF account 5 is for the hotmail email addess. When you logon to microsoft account, it must have the same password as when you logon to the hotmail webmail account and in microsoft account the hotmail email address needs to be the primary address.
btconnect was the BT Business account which only offered pop. I believe it got moved over to microsoft office servers. Is account 5 set up for the btconnect address and you do not have anything set up for the hotmail account ?
Are you aware that you can also do this: Access https://outlook.office365.com/mail/ to login to btconnect.com details and then go to settings to divert emails to another email address - then divert them to hotmail account. In Thunderbird set up for the hotmail account.
