hi everybody. just goofed while removing one "site link tab" from firefox's start page: clicked the wrong command and deleted all instead; now it seems that it also disabled the automatic "recording of the prefered sites" -i don't know the exact name of it even in italian- on firefox opening page...not a terrible issue, but it was handy to have them... tried preferences/options but was not able to find any tool to get them back. thanks in advance for providing some help to one who was born in the age of the vacuum tubes... ;-)

ah..uhh..well..i don't know really what they are called, as i said not even in italian. it's just some big icons representing the more frequently/recently (?) visited sites which are displayed in a line below the search bar...

Thumbnails ..... and on the new tab page they represent frequently visited sites (Top Sites).

You'll see them here :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-new-tab-page

Go ahead and try to reset the value of that preference on the about:config page.

See : https://superuser.com/questions/1333883/how-can-i-restore-a-website-to-the-top-sites-in-firefox-after-accidentally-rem

But if you didn't have all that many Top Sites, and you remember at least the ones that are most important to you, you could just add them again ......

Hello bobo53,

Assuming that you are talking about the Top Sites on the
new tab page; would you try this please :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter. (ignore the warning)

Type in the search bar and look for the preference :

browser.newtabpage.blocked and reset its value.

Then close and restart Firefox.

I don't know if this will bring your Top Sites back, but I'm keeping
my fingers crossed ....

In case I totally misconstrued your post : my apologies !

dear mccoy. thank you very much, but please understand that i am no computer wizatd, rather the opposite. thence, excuse me if i am cautious about your keeping fingers crossed: are you sure that following your atempt won't be dangerous and prime a chain reaction of consequences which i wouldn't be able to manage on my own? thanks. bobo.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you will get your Top Sites back, not that you won't "mess something up" by resetting the value of that preference.

But you didn't confirm that it is indeed de Top Sites that you accidentally removed (?)

I'm so glad that you managed to get your top sites back - well done !

Would you be so kind as to mark my post (the one where I told you what to do and how to do it) as Chosen Solution ? It's the "Solved the problem" button to the right of that post.

Thank you in advance !
