If Thunderbird settings are configured to retain messages on server until deleted, will archiving a message remove it from the server?
In the past, I have had hard drives crash and have lost all emails. As a result, for the last several years, I now configure my settings to retain the emails on the server until I delete them. Does archiving messages remove them from the server the same as deleting them, or is it just the same as leaving them in the inbox?

Hi, you can configure the archive location to be a local folder or a folder on the server. If you select a local folder, archiving a message also removes it from the server. See also Archived Messages.
EDIT. That's for an IMAP account though. It sounds like you are talking about POP. With POP, and your settings, a message is not deleted from the server when you archive it, regardless of archive location setting. It will stay in the inbox.
