I’m running Mac OS 10.12.6 with Firefox 59.0.2 on two MAC minis. I deleted a few certificates on one mini and now when I try to go to Mozilla.org or almost any place, I get “your connection is not secure…”. When I click advanced, I get "www.mozilla.org uses an invalid security certificate…" and I do not get the exception button. I’m up to date. I tried deleting Firefox and reinstalling it. Still the same problem. I can not get to the web page with the refresh button. Is there something that I can copy from my other mini? Or is there some other fix? Do I really need certificates dated from 1999? or for AOL? Sent from my other mini. Thank you.

Hi macminis, when you click the Advanced button, what is the error code (usually starts with SEC_ERROR)? This article covers one of the most common ones users report, but there are a variety of them, so before giving lots of steps, it would be helpful to know what you're facing.

How to troubleshoot security error codes on secure websites

When I try to go to www.mozilla.org it says: sec error cert signature algorithm disabled Here's the picture: https://prod-cdn.sumo.mozilla.net/uploads/images/2018-04-19-17-10-08-a8a5c9.png Do you know how I can replace the deleted certificates?

I'm puzzled why your Firefox is giving that code for this site. There may be some program intercepting your connections.

A couple years ago, the E-Rewards program caused this issue: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1102102

However, it may be something new.

If you click the SEC_ERROR_CERT_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHM_DISABLED code, does Firefox display a panel with an encoded version of the certificate -- looks like a large block of gibberish? If you see that, please click the button to copy it and then paste it into a reply. Then we can decode the certificate and get a better idea of what's going on.

If you do not get a large block of gibberish when clicking that link, you may need to investigate using a different site that is a little less strict with its security. For example:

https://www.userchrome.org/

Do you get the error there?

Assuming so: click the Advanced button, then click the "Add Exception" button (see first screenshot below). We're not really going to add an exception, but we can get a better view of the certificate here.

In the Add Exception dialog, click the "View" button to pop up a certificate viewer. The interesting part is the "Issued by" section. I've marked that on the second screenshot for reference.

On my site, the "Issued by" section shows me "Let's Encrypt Authority X3". What do you see there?

(These example screenshots are from a test page, not my site)

I tried to go to www.mozilla.org it said:

Sec error was cert signature algorithm disabled.

I clicked on the error message. The first block of gibberish is what I saw. I tried www.userchrome.org and it worked. I had never been there before. I tried www.npr.org and it worked. I go there almost daily. I changed the default search engine back to google and tried a search. It said: Your connection is not secure... I clicked Advanced. “Sec error unknown issuer” I clicked on the error message. The second block of gibberish is what I saw. I didn't see an exception button.

https://www.mozilla.org/

The certificate was signed using a signature algorithm that is disabled because it is not secure.

I tried to go to www.mozilla.org it said: Sec error was cert signature algorithm disabled. I clicked on the error message. The first block of gibberish is what I saw.

This looks like the real cert, so I'm not sure why your Firefox is complaining about it.

I changed the default search engine back to google and tried a search. It said: Your connection is not secure... I clicked Advanced. “Sec error unknown issuer” I clicked on the error message. The second block of gibberish is what I saw.

This also looks like the real cert, so I'm not sure why your Firefox is complaining about it.

Could you try deleting the certificate store files and letting Firefox generate new ones (possibly only the newer one will be generated):

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Return

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Show in Finder" button. If Finder highlights an icon with a semi-random name like a1b2c3d4.default, double-click it to display the contents of that profile folder.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Quit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Quit
  • (menu bar) Firefox > Quit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename cert9.db to something like cert9OLD.db. If you see a file named cert8.db, rename that one to cert8OLD.db.

Start Firefox back up again. Any improvement in reaching the Mozilla or Google sites?

Yes! yes and yes! It all works now! A fix that was quick and easy. I had both cert9,db and cert8.db. Thanks. Sent from my first mini.
