You can follow with Firefox what it means to switch to web extensions. For Thunderbird no decision has been made yet.

Firefox 57 will support web extensions only. Thunderbird 57 will continue to support extensions as we know it. Beyond that things are still pretty much in the air, and it's too early to tell.

thanks for your answer.I suppose when the webtechnology is implemented all the addons must be totally rewritten (if the technology allows addons)?
