I understand that there is a way to eliminate this problem, but I do not understand what is causing it in the first place.

Adding New Existing email account

I don't understand what you're doing. New account or existing account?

Existing Account? Not quite sure why there is a distinction. Why would anyone use Thunderbird to obtain a New previously non-existent account?

I have three google email accounts. One is already in Thunderbird and is working fine. When I try to add one of the other google email accounts, I get the error.

Because they want a new email address.

Right click your existing account and select settings check the names of all of your account as they appear in the list on the right. Edit them to ensure the email address is included. (or at least the bit before the @ so they are easy to identify.

Now scroll down to the outgoing server (SMTP entry. Edit the names of those entries to ensure each has the email address they are for in the name.

I think you might have to repeat the SMTP part for each Gmail account you add. I have no done it in years. But I have a feeling it might add them as googleMail and then baulk at the next of that name.
