Using hotmail in one of it's many names or gmail?

Right click the account in the folder pane and select settings. In the copies and folders section of the account settings tell Thunderbird to not save copies of sent mail. The afore mentioned mail servers save a copy of mail as it passes through their outgoing mail servers, hence the duplication.

Personally I retain the duplication, as they often change setting in the mail as it goes through, like who it is from in he case of identities. I like to have both copies around for troubleshooting purposes.

Following the response from Matt, I created a Sent folder in Local Folders and directed the duplicate there. Thanks Matt
