firefox worked ok up until about april 2016. When I revert to the march 2016 version which I saved, it is again ok. Every update gives the indicated problem.

As of Firefox 46.0 and newer Releases for Linux one needs to have GTK 3.4 (three.four) or newer (newest is say 3.20)

Due to this you also need a GTK 3 os theme to theme Firefox 46+ as GTK 2 themes will not work.

Firefox 45.0.2 and older could run with GTK 2.
