You could try this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/addon/mms-auto-correct/

I can't actually recommend it to you. I have tried it and found it irritatingly obstinate and limited.

I don't understand what you want? f you have a dictionary installed then you can spellcheck with that. You can correct, ignore or add it to a personal directory. If you click on spelling in upper bar you get a similar spellchecking as in many word-programs

Auto-correct in my opinion is very limited, it corrects word for word

In a custom autocorrect, as in Word, it will automatically correct wrongly typed words. ie, if I type thier it would automatically replace it with their. The dictionary spell checker highlights errors, but does not correct them.

Hi Zenos I tried to install that link, but it wont install 'because it hasn't been verified'. Any further help would be apreciated.

You can circumvent the error by setting xpinstall.signatures.required to false in Config. editor (Tools/Options/Advanced/General), and if you wish to get mms-autocorrect working in TB, there are detailed instructions here.

Hi sfhowes Thank you for your reply. I found config., and that string is missing. Unfortunately I do not have the knowledge to create and add the string. I am using W10. Auto correct is so useful i am surprised no-one else has done an up to date version that works corectly.

Horses for courses. If it's done well, autocorrect is useful, but it must be able to comply with the user's specific needs. The auto correct on this Android tablet I'm writing on is a constant battle. (In what I've written here, i have had to manually override autocorrelation for autocorrect, wrong for writing on, its for is, hassle for battle, houses for horses, of for if. And it's impossible to stop it from suggesting proper nouns, particularly placenames.) Abbreviations such as i.e. and e.g. are hard work here and in the Thunderbird add-on and that's particularly aggravating in an environment where I need to write down file names such as profiles.ini. You'll see that the add-on reacts to full stops and it auto capitalises, and you have to fight that; it won't let you use a period without assuming it's the end of a sentence.

If you are a reasonably accurate typist, autocorrect can generate as much work as it saves. It might be a net improvement if you're a lousy typist.  ;-)

My point is that with it or without it, you still need to be an eagle-eyed proof reader. I think you'd be disappointed.

In Config. editor, right-click, New/Boolean, and paste the preference name xpinstall.signatures.required, set it to false, OK to exit Options, restart TB.

Thank you for your helpful reply. I now have the string in the config editor, but unfortunately it still wont work correctly. Maybe it is not suitable for version 45 with W10.

With TB 45 on W10, it only seems to work as far as the first 3 preferences, such as capitalizing the first word of a sentence (except for the first sentence of a message), but doesn't autocorrect words anymore (it worked in an earlier version of TB). So, it looks like it needs an overhaul to be of any use today.

Thank you for your help. Perhaps someone will take up the challenge of a new version.
