This has only started happening since the last update of Firefox 41.10. My system is OSX 10.7.5. (Weirdly, it just crashed in the middle of writing this question, the first time it has done this outside of shutting Firefox down.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it and select Submit.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

You can check for issues caused by plugins and set plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page.

I will reply again after I test things out in 'Safe Mode' and see if that helps, and also 'Ask to Activate' with the plug-ins.

Many thanks.

For some time now, a lot of Mac’s with Microsoft programs have been crashing. Check with Microsoft / Mac support sites.

Thanks for picking that up FredMcD. I will check those support sites.

After doing one start in 'Safe' Mode a couple of days ago, and since then opening/using Firefox normally, the problem hasn't resurfaced.

I am also seeing if it's connected to the plug-ins as per cor-el instructions.

More in a couple of days.
