Can you fix Thunderbird's generating countless multiple copies of incoming mail that contains attachments - especially images?

I can go to my POP to delete emails with large attachments. This is a step I would like to avoid. Does software like "Outlook" have this problem also? Can you fix Thunderbird?

I'm afraid that if I go out town and someone sends me an email, I'll have thousands of replicates to deal with.

Thanks

Dale

The first I head of such issues where with Nortons anti virus going belly up on mail it did not like. Symantec suggestion was to disable email scanning.
