all bookmarks gone after Firefox update
I updated with the "Newest" Firefox (see their ad. below), now all my saved Bookmarks are gone, and one of my toolbars is gone with all my saved bookmarks and other data. I tried restoring everything back to a previous date, but everything is still gone. I am using 32 bit, Windows Home Premium on a Desktop computer. Can anyone help me get my old bookmarks back.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
- "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
- View > Toolbars
You can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar - Right-click empty toolbar area
Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
- "3-bar" menu button > Customize
- check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
- if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
- if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
- if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button to restore the default toolbar setup
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Still no old bookmarks, I got the tool bars, but none of my old information is there.
Do you have any compressed .jsonlz4 backups available?
- Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore
Did you try the Places Maintenance extension?
Yes I tried that. It only goes back to Aug 27th, that isn't far enough back to get my old bookmarks. What is "the Places Maintenance extension"?

One possible reason for losing add-on toolbars is the Refresh feature. This may be offered with an explanation that Firefox is running slowly and you can speed it up by restoring some default settings. If you click that button, your settings folder is moved to the desktop inside a folder named Old Firefox Data. Do you see anything like that?
Unfortunately, some users who used Refresh and then immediately used Windows' System Restore feature ended up losing the Old Firefox Data folder because it didn't exist as of the restore date. In that case, I don't know if there is a way to recover it.
If you do a System Restore then Windows should create a restore point to be able to undo the restore.
You can use a utility to check for possible files to recover.
OK, now I can't get into any of my starting page items, no mail, firefox, eBay etc. a pop up window opens saying "Firefox, Couldn't Load XPCOM."
I tried a do a restore point from before I had any problems, now I get a message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause....etc.....Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt."
I am writing from a friends lap top.
Now what? David
You likely have a broken Firefox installation as the result of the System Restore and will have to reinstall Firefox.
You can find the full version of the current Firefox release (40.0.3) in all languages and all operating systems here:
