I'm using Firefox 39 on Linux. While surfing pages will open new windows and that is what I want to stop. How can I stop webpages from opening new windows?

What is in these new pages? Ads?

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

On Linux malware is not really present. You either have an extension that causes this or you visit website that open such a pop-up window.
