I'm and online student and they say it only works in Firefox, however, when I log on to their site it doesn't recognize my user name and password, then I request a new password and it lets me in, but when I go to play the audio exercises I get no audio.

Does the unrecognized login come back again and again, or have you solved that one by resetting your password?

Regarding no audio, some users have reported that Firefox does not work correctly with their speakers but it does work with a headset. Have you noticed anything like that?

More generally:

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

The audio doesn't work with headphone or with speakers. I have cleared all the cookies manually and history. And yes I have to reset the password each time to log on to the site. However I have not tried the safe mode I will try that now

Is it a silent video or purely audio?

Is the site using a plugin to play the audio? Usually a notification icon that looks a bit like a Lego block will appear in the address bar on a site that uses a plugin. You can click that icon to control the site's permission to use the plugin, and also see which one the site wants to use. If there is no icon, it could mean the problem is with the built-in video/audio player, or that something else is blocking the plugin request.

Also, do you want to mention what site it is?

Do you see anything in the Windows Volume mixer (Firefox or plugin-container)?

Are there any errors in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) about playing media files?
