why do I receive two duplicate copies of each attachment in my incoming imap email messages?

Most of my incoming IMAP email *attachments* arrive in duplicate (one message). With rare exceptions, I usually have two copies of each attachment), the first one listed is often corrupt and slightly smaller in size. If I receive a msg with 3 intended attachments, 6 attachments show up, etc. What causes this and how can I fix it? I'm using Thunderbird 31.5.0 on Windows 8.1.

I'm using Windows Defender, with a security focused IMAP hosting/Spam/malware filtering service. Open to unofficial suggestions on desktop malware front (use MalwareBytes MBAM free on occasion) and Secunia PSI.

TIA,

Michael
