why is firefox now saving my viewing history in privacy mode and available in regular firefox as well? this is a disappointing failure.

i just went to private viewing mode and inserted the first letter of a web address and the entire web address appeared. I then went to regular firefox to test this and the same privately-viewed web address showed up there as well. this has never happened before.

can you try to reset firefox and see if this can address the issue...

This happens to me too. I filed a bug for what may be expected: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1111049

However private mode is designed to just not save the browser data, not to not have access to that information.

Please do comment on the bug for some rationale, I would be happy to help.

At this time though it is expected behavior :-)
