OKay guys. I have search this in google for too long. The only answers I got was to go in tools>account setting>outgoing setting>and from here I am in confusion.

WHen i get here I only have one server listed smtp.nifty.com when i click edit there is no checking place for username and password but i can write username when I select authentication by password. There is a place to write username and password is asked when i try to send it. Since I dont use morzilla thunderbird I dont know which username and password it requires? Is it the account username and password ??because it is not working.

I notice that you are using port 25 to send. many servers do not like using port 25.

Try this: change the outgoing server (SMTP) port to 465

Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP) select the server name and click on 'Edit' button

  • Description: Nifty Mail
  • Server name: smtp.nifty.com
  • port: 465
  • connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • User name = full nifty.com email address
  • click on OK
  • click on OK to save Account Settings changes.

then retest sending and report on result. If you get any error messages please tell me..word for word.

Relaying errors from the server indicate your trying to send mail without a password. That is your server requires authentication and you are not supplying it.

Thunderbird stores passwords in a password manager, not as plain text in the registry as some other mail client do. So when you set up your account you enter your user name. When you send mail your asked for the password that goes with that outgoing server and select for it to be stored in the password manager if you want Thunderbird to remember your password.

If your trying to send mail from say [email protected] using the nifty server then it is going to tell you that you can not do that. You should be using Google SMTP server not the nifty one and expecting it to relay for the other account. I would assume the nifty server will only accept outgoing mail for @Nifty.com mail addresses.

It is more than likely that the server is blocking port 25 as part of an anti-spam method they have decided to use. Many servers are doing this now.

i have checked on the internet and there are quite a few reports from people using smtp.nifty.com suddenly having this issue. So I do not think anyone has been messing with your computer.

good to hear you are up and running again.

Port 25 has been for about a decade the port for server to server mail transfer. So mail from say google.com will arrive on port 25 to the NIfty server. Historically it was also the port for sending all mail.

Port 465 as suggested by Toad-Hall is the mail lodgement port for mail clients using SSL. Port 587 is designated for the same thing without SLL security.

This was established in an attempt to reduce the amount of SPAM that was on the internet. When a server connect on port 25 the receiving server does a DNS check to make sure the server is listed in the MX record for the domain. If it is not it will not accept mail. The result is mail coming from domestic computers that have been turned into spam bots is rejected out of hand.

It has taken about a decade for this change to filter down, but the last holdouts are starting to close off this spam source for good. In the long run it can only be good.
