Going from such an old version to something more modern likely means you have some problems in your profile. Try Resetting Firefox Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

After that, try to update your graphics driver Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL

I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate S.P. II. That made a huge improvement. I will now follow up on your suggestion re the Grahpics drivers.

I have now upgraded both Firefox and Windows Vists to the current versions.

Initially my computer was running slow so I did a Clean Disk and Defrag and this fixed the probem with the Op System running slow.

However Firefox still runs somewhat slower than it did previously. I have turned off Hardware Enhancement which seemed to improve it a bit but still not as fast as it was with version 6.

The slowness appears to be in downloading websites and moving from page to page. I have checked my connection speed and that has not changed from what is used to be.

Is 3 Gb of Ram enough to for version 31? I sometimes get alerts that Firefox is using too much CPU.

Your advice would be appreciated
