Emails I have "deleted" keep showing up. Why? How do I stop this?

I have deleted some emails from my "trash" and after performing this action, they are gone until the next time I access my email account; they show up again. I am particularly concerned with an email I received from a party I have never dealt with and my virus protection keeps warning me about this email-that it may contain malicious content and a virus. This is troublesome to me; I want it out of my email and off my computer.

Deleting a message just marks them for deletion and hides them from view. This is generally enough to keep them hidden for most email providers. Some providers seem to ignore this action. To completely remove emails you need to Compact the folders. Compacting is a standard maintenance task and should be performed routinely.
