If a popup discription of a link spawns and i goto another tab, the popup stays with me on every other tab. I have to close the originating tab in order to get rid of the popup discription. How Do I Stop This Annoying Glitch?! Thanks....... Everything updated, uninstalled, re-installed, tested all my addons idividually, Nothing works.

I think you are referring to a tooltip that appears near the mouse pointer when you have hovered over something, and not the "status" or "message" area at the lower left/right of the page where Firefox shows the full URL of a link.

This bug of tooltips lingering when you change tabs or windows before they fade out was tracked down and squashed (#1550637). However, the initial fix needed to be fixed, so it didn't get into the most recent update (68.0.2). The fix will be in Firefox 69.0, due out September 3rd.

If you can't wait:

You could consider using Firefox 69 in its pre-release form as the "beta" or "developer" edition of Firefox. You can read more about them here: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/channel/desktop/

Please make a backup of your profiles before changing "channels": Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Is this with many websites, some, a few?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

It's random. Tried all the tips & tricks. Nothing works.

I wonder whether it would help to make sure that more tabs open in the background so you can control the timing of switching tabs? Here are the relevant settings for that:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste inback and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the following preferences to switch the value from false to true as desired:

  • browser.tabs.loadInBackground - when you right-click > Open Link in New Tab, or Ctrl+click, or middle-click a link (default = true, this is the checkbox on the Options page)
  • browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground - when a link was coded to launch in a new window and Firefox switched it to a new tab instead (default = false)
  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground - when you direct a bookmark to a new tab (e.g., using right-click > Open in New Tab, or Ctrl+click, or middle-click a bookmark) (default = false)

Or maybe the extra click to switch tabs is even more annoying than the occasional lingering tooltips...

I am already using Firefox 69.0, on Ubuntu 16.04. The tooltips are still popping up.

If a page has assigned a title attribute to a link or other element, it's normal for a tooltip to pop up showing the title near the mouse pointer. The bug in Firefox 68 was that the tooltip didn't always go away when switching tabs.

Are you still having that exact problem or is it some different issue with tooltips?

more options

I don't want these tooltips popping up for every picture or element I hover over. I have set browser.chrome.toolbar_tips to false, as suggested, and this has no effect.

Switching tabs does not leave residual tooltips showing.

Also I thought there was a delay one could specify to delay the appearance of a tooltip if I don't want to uncondionally suppress them, but I can't find this. Is there such a parameter?

Last update seems to have fixed this issue for me. No problems since. Thanks all for your input. Problem Solved!

Maybe there is an add-on to remove the title attributes so Firefox isn't triggered to show them in tooltips.

Preferences that refer to chrome are almost always for the user interface, not web content.

I don't recall one.
