So, Firefox has announced to drop NPAPI support at end of 2016. What would be an alternative for legacy sites?

For example, Google Chrome introduced Chrome Legacy Browser Support (Chrome LBS), that redirects sites using NPAPI technology. A list is maintained with the sites.

Even though, it's little more than a year since Firefox will be doing that, it's never too late to get started on something that effect the web.

hi, you can have a look at long standing extensions like https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ie-tab-2-ff-36

This extension allows you to define domains that you want to open in Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, so when you follow a link on one of those domains, IE will open it: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-in-ie/

I don't recall whether I tested that. I don't use the extension on a daily basis because I just open IE directly when needed. Feel free to try it out!

The list is stored in one of these preferences, so any tool you use to push out preferences to Firefox users could set them (although that may not provide a way for users to add to the set):

  • extensions.openinie.DomainList (I have data in this one)
  • [email protected] (on mine, this one is blank)
