FF can't load certain websites, IE can, tried clearing history & cache, FF not blocking the sites

About two weeks ago, whenever I visited the following site, FF gave me a "The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading..." error message.: http://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php Ever since, I've been able to access it through IE. Today the same problem occurred with this site, which I can also access thru IE: http://doo-wop.blogg.org/

I cleared all my history and cookies, but the problem continues. I am using Windows 7, and was using FF 40.0.3. I just updated to FF 41.0, restarted FF, but find the sites still give the same "connection reset" error message.

What security software do you have?

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

This Connection is Untrusted is sometimes caused because the computer system clock is wrong. Check the time / date / time zone settings.

Hi Fred,

How do I remove the plug-ins? I'm eager to remove them as you suggest. I found them listed under the Add-ons Manager, but the only options I could find were to either update them, always activate, never activate, and ask to activate. I hunted around Mozilla for info on how to remove, but I couldn't follow them. Perhaps the procedural steps or locations for options were for earlier versions of FF than 41.0. Thank you for starting me on the path to resolving this issue. Regards, Marc

Type about:plugins<enter> in the address bar. Now search for the plug-in.

Example; Adobe Acrobat File: nppdf32.dll,nppdf32.dll Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\browser\nppdf32.dll,C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AIR\nppdf32.dll Version: 11.0.9.29 State: Enabled Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.9

This will show you the path to that program. Copy the Path Only. Also note the name of the file, and remember it. Now Close Firefox. Open your file browser and paste the path in the address bar. Find the file, and delete it. Now you can restart Firefox. Warning ! Remember to delete the right program.

To be safe, remove all of them. Then install the current.

Thank you for those clear instructions. I closed FF and successfully removed both plug-ins, restarted FF, and see they were removed. But I couldn't find the current version of the plug-in. In the Add-ons Manager search box I typed in "Adobe Acrobat," the results didn't show anything resembling what I'd removed. However, I don't know if I even needed them. When I'm using FF and click on a pdf document on the Web and click on it, the document opens in Acrobat (I have the paid version). So I'm not even sure I needed those plug-ins.

I still am not able to access the two websites with FF, but maybe dealing wtih this unrelated issue you spotted will make FF run better. So I appreciate your help, and hope that at some point someone can suggest a fix so I won't have to use IE to access those sites.
