Why can I not open a you tube item on Firefox

I've been sent 4 different music videos on email but cannot open them in order to hear them. I'm advised that the 'plugin' is vulnerable. What is a plugin?

Hmm, what kind of files were you sent?

Your "More System Details" shows that you have a rather old version of the Flash player plugin in Firefox: Shockwave Flash 11.5 r502

A plugin is a chunk of computer code that another company, like Adobe, releases to add capabilities to Firefox. In this case, the Flash player handles a range of different kinds of media right inside a Firefox tab inside of requiring you to download the media and play it in a separate program.

But to get back to the vulnerable part, you can update Flash by downloading a fresh installer from Adobe:

Sometimes the new Flash installer doesn't clean out the old plugin. To give it the best shot at doing that, it's best to close Firefox after the download and run the Flash installer with Firefox closed to avoid locking the old file. After the install, you can check for the Add-ons page to see whether there was a clean substitution of the new Shockwave Flash for the old one.

To open the Add-ons page, either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins.

Success?
