My configured account reports no messages on POP3 gmail account. But if I configure a new account with same settings, it finds over 200 messages to download

I have been using gmail account for over 5 years now and there has been no problem downloading POP3 messages. Recently I found that some of the messages are not downloaded by Thunderbird, but were available for online viewing. Suddenly sometimes I get 2 days old messages downloaded by Thunderbird. If I create an account in Outlook Express, it finds messages to download. If I create a new account with same settings on Thunderbird, it finds these messages to download, but my existing configured account doesn't download the messages.

Any clue?

new accounts default to IMAP not POP and therefore can see new messages in folders other than the inbox, like important and family and a whole raft of gmail specific folders.

I had configured my account as POP and not IMAP.

Have you enabled the "r5ecent mode at gmail ? if not you best do so. Or find a more standards compliant provider like yahoo.
