I got to a site with a word document on it say http://climatechange.govt.nz/emissions-trading-scheme/ets-review-2011/statement-for-consultation.html

I click on the word document and the dialog box comes up opening .... what should firefox do with this file open with MSOfficeWord default comes up (word 2007)

Click ok and wait - word pops up and then an error message 'there was a problem sending the command to the program' and the document does not open

does it help when your go into the startmenu > run (or press windows-key + r) and open:

winword.exe /r

or in case that doesn't help you might also want to try running the fixit-tool provided by microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/92154.../en-us.

run winword.exe /r and nothing happened except a lot of disk activity. I had tried this before

I closed word and then tried the same process and it now works. If word is already open it still has the same error message

Same issue with excel that is open from firefox when the program is already open there is an error whereas if the program is not open it opens and the file opens. Acrobat works either way
