I have Windows XP, with svc pkg 3, system is 32 bit.

I'm about to update my plugins on my update Foxfire 7.01 and am wondering if the plugin updates will be 64 bit or if the 32 bit only updates will be loaded via the Foxfire plugin page.

I received a prompt to update Java, and it says it's compatible with XP, but in my research, I saw that 64 bit browsers require that both 64 bit and 32 bit Java be downloaded.

Just wondering if, since I have XP 32 bit, if both will automatically be downloaded via Foxfire plugin page, or if I should manually download both.

I'm not a techie, but can maneuver my way around (have learned alot by reading and through my problem solving for my computer over the years). Please explain in "non-techie" speak please. :) I'm just learning about hardware...I know my way around, but have never gotten into hardware until now...since I have to be careful since my computer is an older one, to not download big memory hogging programs or programming incompatible with my system.

Hope this makes sense! Thanks, Donna

PS Sorry about the double post, but I'm new to the support forums and I really want to update my Java plugin, as it fixes security issues.

Anybody else wondering about this? Has anyone else with XP downloaded the new Java update in plugins and are you running okay?

I want to update my Java plugin, but am waiting to see if others with XP, 32 bit have updated and how it works for them.

Thanks!

PS Sorry about the double post, I'm new to the support forums. My question had dropped way down and I really want to update Java, as it has security issues.

Hi Donna, I am using Mozilla Firefox 8 beta 2(the latest version) on Windows XP SP3 (32-bit) and my browser's java plugin version is 1.6.0.26 (last updated August 17,2011) , older than your browser's java's plugin version i.e. 1.6.0.27. The java plugin is working fine for me.There's no need to update it.I will download the latest java plugin(1.7.0.1) and install it on my computer.I will let you know if any problem occurs.

Thank you very much!!  :)

Funny thing, I had the icon pop up on my taskbar for the update. Sooo, I check and sure enough FF Java plugin needs to be updated...hence I asked this question, after checking on the update.

Anywho, even though I have my settings to NOT download plugin updates without my permission, the 1.6.0.27 version was downloaded by FF.

I also discovered, that by right clicking on the Java update icon on taskbar, I could see its status and sure enough, there it was on FF.

So, this 1.7.0.1 Java update is what FF is asking us to download? Strange....I get an old update for Java on my taskbar and the newest via FF plugin page. lol

My head spins with this stuff, at times.

I'm going to go ahead and update it, then, since Java says it addresses security issues.

Thanks XR!! I really appreciate the prompt help.

Donna

Okay, another user at the other version of this question I posted, gave me a link for Java update. IT has an update of 6 update 29! lol

Maybe the discrepancy is that you have FF Beta 8?

I'm going with the 6 update 29 for now, as I'm leery of Beta stuff.

Thanks so much for your help, though! Talk about confusion?! The Java update on my taskbar was 6 update 27 (already downloaded by FF for me...despite my setting of being notified first), then you have a newer one the 7.01, THEN I see the 6 update 29! lol I am SO happy this forum is here! I'd be pulling my hair out. LOL

Go to the address bar of your Firefox browser and type about:addons and click "Check to see if your plugins are up to date" at the top.

Firefox will show you all the recommended updates for the plugins on your FF browser.

This might help you to make your browser's plugins up to date,in case you need to update other outdated plugins without any worries.

I will do that from now on. I used a link suggested to me and it crashed FF.

But, I logged off, then restarted and checked my addons and Java is up to date.

My hesitation was whether 64 or 32 bit Java would be loaded. The 32 bit for XP was loaded.

Heading out. Oh did I tell you about CCleaner? It's great and free! Just search for CCleaner and download from Pirifoam for free. It gets rid of remnants of uninstalled programs, all history/temp files/cookies from all browsers on your system and more. I've been using it for years, as have my friends.

Thanks again, think I'm all set now.

PS Do you have the Google Update and Windows Presentation addons? I didn't add them, but they are there and weren't removed as incompatible when I updated from FF 7 to 7.01. So, I havn't disabled them. The Windows Presentation plugin hasn't been updated since 2008 and has no updates! Neither does the Google Update. Think I'll make this a separate subject. Thanks so much for your help!

Wait, I still didn't find out if FF automatically loads the plugins to 32 bits and not 64 bits! lol

I guess I'll leave this open, until someone can answer that specifically, so I know before I use FF to update my plugins. I did the last Java update via the Java link and crashed Java toolkit and FF...so I'll leave this open.

Maybe someone will know if FF knows to download only 32 bit components to those of us with older computers.

Btw, I did create a separate question as to the other 2 plugins.

I'll get this forum thing down, lol. Last night was my first time on here.
