Firefox 3.6 won't remember passwords/usernames, even though they are saved in 'Saved Passwords'
I need to re-type username and password every single time, for every single website (Google, Linkedin, etc.), no exceptions.

Some sites don't allow automatic login. See Usernames and passwords are not saved Not sure about Linkedin. They had a security problem a short while ago and may have changed their policy. See: Linkedin Profiles spread Trojans
Maybe try using a Master Password instead. See Use a Primary Password to protect stored logins and passwords
You could try running Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
- Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
- Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
- In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended, so websites won't remember you.
- In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode Firefox won't fill names and passwords automatically.
- Do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
