I cannot find the correct search terms to find what I am looking for and do not know if Thunderbird has this option or if there is an add-on.

Outlook (which I am in the process of replacing) has the ability to search an email account for “Messages in this Conversation” (see attached image.) It will then return a list of all common emails for the conversation as well as the folder it is locate in (see attached image.)

Can Thunderbird search in such a way? What type of search is this?

Thank you in advance

Right click the displayed message in the list.... open message in conversation.\ Opens a new tab with the entire conversaion. In my case because I have an account configured twice, once as POP and again as IMAP my conversations display shows two of everything when I look at mail from that account.

Thank you for reply. Currently running Thunderbird 91.10.0 (64-bit) and I do not see the option of "Open message in conversation." I've gone through the menus (now knowing what to search for) and did not see any type of toggle or option or setting. Please see image below. The options on the flyout (right click) menu are default, other than setting the accounts to open have not changed anything within the program yet.

Your image shows you are looking in the correct location - it would be listed in top section.

Where did you get the download ? This is the official website - showing all languages for various OS https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Are you using portableapps version? Someone did report an issue in that variant.

This problem can be caused if the Global Search Indexer is disabled.

  • Menu icon ≡ > Preferences > General
  • Scroll to the bottom to find 'Indexing'
  • select checkbox 'Enable Global Search and Indexer' to switch it on.

However, your image shows it is not disabled as I can see it clearly - the box 'Search (Ctrl+K)'

Alternative to try: Menu icon ≡ > Message > Open in Conversation Or perhaps using keboard shortcut 'Ctrl+Shift+O' on selected email in list.

No the global search is enabled... or there would be no Ctrl+K search on the toolbar. Or should not be as without the Global indexes global search does not work.

However the menu entry does not appear unless the email can be opened in a conversation based on the information in the global index. Occasionally these do become corrupt and need to be deleted. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database

Toad-Hall,

Menu > Help > About brought up the small "about" window, when I pressed the "Release notes" link, the page behind the "About Mozilla Thunderbird" loaded (see attached image.) Not sure where I got it from, though I was on the Thunderbird site. Should I delete it and find a different version? If I should install different version, could you please reply with URL?

Matt,

As far as I know I am not using the mobile version. Sounds like I have a flavor that is not correct so will see what Toad-Hall replies with and his response could make all our hoop jumping mute =/

Appreciate the assistance.

You should by this time have a number of replies to this topic in your inbox. Try right clicking them one of the earlier ones as indexing is not immediate and see if the open in conversation is available as the third entry from the top.

Q: Are the folders set up to be used in Global Index ? check each folder.

  • Right click on folder and select 'Properties'
  • This checkbox must be selected: 'Include messages in this folder in Global Search results'
  • Click on 'OK'

Q: Did you use the link provided by Matt to rebuild the global index ? Please note you must exit Thunderbird before deleting the 'global-messages-db.sqlite' file.
