Okay, I'm going to describe something that sounds a little convoluted, but bear with me.

Normally, Firefox will scale the font size everything in the browser based on your system font size. You can override that using a hidden setting. Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. Since we have had this setting for a long time and I use it myself, I feel comfortable mentioning it.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste devp and pause while the list is filtered

The only match should be layout.css.devPixelsPerPx with a default value of -1.0

(3) Double-click the preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 1.5 (no minus sign) then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change. The font size should 150% of normal. (Unless you are using an ultra-high res display, in which case that might be the default.)

So is it good, too large or WAY too large? You can double-click and edit to 1.25 or 1.1 and see which level works best for you on the toolbars/sidebar.

Please be careful not to enter a value lower than 1 or higher than 10 to avoid making the page unusable. If you do have a disaster, we can describe some recovery options.

What if pages are now too large?

You can use the default site zoom setting on the Settings page to counteract a large browser scaling. For example, if you have 1.25 as your browser scaling but pages are too large, you can try 90% as your default page zoom.

Can you get everything to a good size?

Hi, which list are you viewing -- or are all of them too small? For example:

  • Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B)
  • Bookmarks Toolbar or one of its folders
  • main menu button > Bookmarks
  • (menu bar) Bookmarks
  • Organizer window ("Manage Bookmarks")
