I have never asked a question about Thunderbird here and have been using it since around verson 1. A LONG time. I'm currently using v91.6.1 (64-bit) release.

Over the last couple of months I began to realize that many of the images within my messages failed to display. I have not had "Allow remote content in messages" checked, but instead had an exception list that has grown for many years. Message body set as "Original HTML." View settings are set to "Display Attachments Inline."

As soon as this issue cropped up, I changed the settings for "Allow remote content in messages" and the problem still persists.

Eventually, I removed Thunderbird completely, removed the directories within Users/xxx/AppData Local and Roaming, then reinstalled. The problem STILL persists.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security for anti-virus and have paused protection and the problem still persists.

What I find odd is that some images display. Not many, but some. At present I still have "Allow remote content" enabled, Message body set to "Original HTML". Sure has me stumped.

Are you comfortable viewing HTML? Messages can be embedded into the message, or can link to a remote server. The 'Allow remote content' only addresses the linked images, not the embedded ones. Embedded images are attached to the message and your anti-virus may be preventing your viewing them.

I discussed this with my son yesterday, commenting to him that I had disable Kaspersky anti-virus and the problem did not go away. His reply was, "Why do you have Russian anti-virus software in the world of today?" Seemed like a valid question and I decided to remove it completely. As soon as it was removed the problem was solved. Seems odd that disabling it temporarily didn't keep it from blocking remote content, but I'm going to move to something different and will test a few more a/v products and settle on one.

For me personally, I do NOT want to have "Allow remote content" enabled. I prefer to choose which sites I will allow and will start building my whitelist once again with "Allow remote content" disabled.

I read so many of these kinds of messages looking for a solution, all I can say for anyone stumbling across this thread, if you still have the problem, remove your anti-virus package completely instead of disabling it. In my case, I didn't re-install it to see if it still worked, I installed a different a/v package all together.

Thanks for your reply David!
