Lost the hard drive on laptop. Trying to recover from backups. The profiles in the backup has bookmark backups with a .jsonlz4.mhe filetype. Firefox ESR 38.5.1 on my rebuilt system does not support that file type. It is looking for .json and .jsonlz4 files. This is a work computer. I dont think the version on the lost system was ESR.

What is the difference in the types and how do i recover from the .jsonlz4.mhe ?

I found the answer. The file was an encrypted file, which is why it had a different file type. Once i decrypted it, Firefox had all of my bookmarks in place.

Thanks for your help.

Nothing about Firefox.

Copy one of those files to the desktop. Remove the .mhe from the name, leaving the .jsonlz4

Now move the file in the same directory it came from. Can you use it now?

I tried that previously. Made a copy and changed the file type by removing the .mhe Firefox does see the file using the restore function, but errors "Unable to process the backup file."

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
