Recently - in the past month or so - I've been having this problem where if I've run firefox for too long, the top toolbars will suddenly disappear and the space will reset to the computer theme glass color (in Windows 7). The images will appear and disappear if I run my mouse over them. The browser will work for another 10-20 seconds, giving me time to close out of my tabs and windows, before it crashes.

(I'll try to attach a GIF I took of the problem in a comment, my description doesn't do the thing justice.)

Two months ago I reset my browser because the addon Stylish wasn't working. However this problem appeared after I downloaded a couple updates, so I don't think it's related. And firefox has crashed without any scripts being active on any tabs; it has also begun to crash randomly, with no toolbar-disappearing act at all. Before resetting the browser I installed the addons FEBE and OPIE, and since then I've also added Weather Forecast and Session Manager, the latter because of the crashing problem.

I love using Firefox and I don't want to switch, but this problem has been getting worse and worse. When it started it only happened once in a while - now it's happening up to three times a day. I close my windows preemptively sometimes and watch all videos on Explorer. I'd like to get this fixed before my finals start.

You can try to disable OMTC and leave hardware acceleration in Firefox enabled.

  • about:config page: layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

So it's only crashed twice since I did those two things on Saturday...but then about 10 minutes ago guess which addon decided to stop working. That's right, folks, Stylish.

I'm gonna backup and reset Firefox again unless you can think of something better to do.
