First: I am a grateful user of both Firefox and Thunderbird. Their easy customization is, IMO, unbeatable and security seems excellent. Have used numerous e-mail programs since the 1980s, and Tbird easily surpasses them all. Many thanks to developers and maintainers!

Currently using Thunderbird 78.12.0. Recently, became unable to collect POP mail from just one of many accounts.

I download mail from about 20 accounts into one Inbox. Most accounts are in two shared-hosting domains that I own. Others are Verizon.net legacy accounts, now AOL. I am able to fetch POP mail for all but one Vz.net account. I have everything arriving there forwarded to another account for download, and can also log into AOL webmail to ensure that I'm not missing anything. (-Also proves that password is correct.)

When attempting to download from the XYZ account, Thunderbird hangs for a long time, then gives either of these error messages:

Sending of password for user XYZ did not succeed. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded: +

     - or -

Sending of password for user XYZ did not succeed. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded: [SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later.

I have played with all obvious settings for XYZ, and also confirmed that they match those of the other AOL/Vz accounts that work fine. Have deleted/re-entered the saved password, updated Tbird, rebooted PC, etc. Any suggestions for repairing this one account, or at least identifying the glitch?

Thanks in advance!

Cten.......Try this AOL fix from Bo445:

Bo445 7/15/21, 1:40 PM more options Found this info below on https://downdetector.com/status/aol/. I used it and my AOL/Verizon incoming and outgoing mail now works. You retain your existing webmail password, and generate a new one for your Thunderbird in- and outgoing mail.

Thunderbird users, listen up. We have to enter a new password for incoming & a new password for outgoing. In AOL webmail, click on "Options" in the upper right, under your email address. Go to Account Info Go to Security (list on the left) Scroll all the way down to "Manage App Passwords" Generate a code for "other" by inputting "Thunderbird" Copy and save it to clipboard.

Go back to Tbird. Click on 3 bars in upper right, then "options" Then "privacy and security" Scroll down to "saved passwords" Delete the old ones. Attempt to receive emails. When prompted, give Tbird the new password. Make sure to check "manage with password manager," or something like that. Then do the same for sending an email. Check to make sure the "saved passwords" have one for incoming & one for outgoing.

Wow - many thanks to Bo445 for publishing this solution and to duncanst for bringing it here. I had not found Bo445's OP with considerable searching, and would never have found the several necessary settings and locations w/o help.

In case useful to someone, a bit more info: When I I generated and entered the new PW for account [email protected], it worked perfectly. At the same time, all my other Vz/AOL accounts stopped working for Tbird POPmail up/download. After about two hours' messing around, I got them all working (and tested for up/download).

Here's where it gets weird. I had been using Vz/AOL's server, smtp.verizon.net, for outgoing mail with those accounts; my web-hosting company's designated SMTP server as "Default Server" for all the others. This no longer seems to work. Instead, I had to switch all the Vz/AOL accounts to the default server. Also, my original passwords still work for up- and downloading POPmail for all the Vz/AOL accounts other than XYZ.

I don't plan to investigate further, but now have this approach available if anything breaks again. I'm very happy to have it all working properly, and even more grateful for the support of the Mozilla volunteers. Kudos to you all!
