I know in the past that when I open the add-ons tab and click see more, the page opens in thunderbird. Becuase when i hover over a theme it will load in thunderbird to get an idea of how it looks and to install it, it installs directly into thunderbird.

now the link opens in a browser. and when i click add to thunderbirdI get:

We're sorry, but we can't find what you're looking for.

The page or file you requested wasn't found on our site. It's possible that you clicked a link that's out of date, or typed in the address incorrectly.

If you typed in the address, please double check the spelling. If you followed a link from somewhere, please file an issue. Tell us where you came from and what you were looking for, and we'll do our best to fix it. Or you can just jump over to some of the popular pages on our website.

Are you interested in a list of featured add-ons? Do you want to search for add-ons? You may go to the search page or just use the search field above. If you prefer to start over, just go to the add-ons front page.

and this is a theme from Madonna, and we know they always work.

Some screenshots of trying to install through a browser.

I have checked all my preferences in thunderbird and I see nothing that states open add-on links in external browser.

I think the problem may be due to the moving this week of TB add-ons from the mozilla website to the thunderbird.net website. The usual method of dragging the Download link from an add-on's website (opened in the browser) and dropping it onto Tools/Add-ons/Extensions in TB doesn't work with lightweight themes.

The problem is mentioned in this bug:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1444341

interesting... but I just updated a theme in June when my Son's soon to be inlaws from the UK were coming, I found a British flag theme.

the Bugzilla link was 4 months ago. my issue is recent unless they are finally finishing up the transition.

I think the lightweight theme installations were working when they were hosted on mozilla, but since July 17 all TB add-ons, including complete and lightweight themes, are hosted on thunderbird.net. Complete themes and extensions, dictionaries etc. can be downloaded from the add-on's website and then installed in TB, but lightweight themes have to be installed from within the program itself. At the moment, it's not working; clicking on a theme in Tools/Add-ons/Get Add-ons opens the web browser to the theme's webpage, but the 'Add to Thunderbird' button adds the theme to Firefox.

AMO blogged in 12 July that they were removing theme previews. So that part will probably not be returning. https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2018/07/12/upcoming-changes-for-themes/

Well, that is sad. the one way we can preview them. hmm. Not a game changer, not why i use Thunderbird, but scared and worried about its future. what else are they taking away that we are used to.

Thunderbird has been developed by a dedicated volunteer community for a number of years now. One of the latest moves to separate Mozilla and Thunderbird infrastructure is the migration of add-ons to thunderbird.net. This has been a long time coming. Once Firefox changed their add-ons to web extensions Thunderbird and Sea monkey have been in a position that required a separate site really, the two add-ons processes were simply too different.

I might be wrong about the themes, it depends on when the software for the add-on site was cloned for the Thunderbird site and if the update that removes the functionality is applied on the Thunderbird.net. Timing is everything and as there is no change to the technology in Thunderbird that will require the change as with Firefox, not that I am aware of anyway, it might be only Firefox looses the preview.

Really the future looks fairly secure. There is some money in the tin, sufficient to hire some contractors to look after some of the infrastructure like set up our own addon site. If donations continue, so will development. It will largely be up to the user base to fund the future. Mozilla is happy to accept and process our donations, but they are not putting money into the project for development.

Here are some instructions for installing lightweight themes, or personas, in TB:

https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/how-on-earth-do-you-install-a-thunderbird-theme/30328/2?u=sfhowes

1. Click on “Themes” on the left-side menu in the Add-on Manager.

2. You’ll see “Looking to personalize your browser? Choose from thousands of themes.” at the top. Click on the second sentence.

3. That will open the Theme page inside Thunderbird. Each theme listed here has a little “Add” button under it on mouseover, which will also be the case if you Search in the top right.

Tested and working in TB60. In TB 52, the Themes section is named Appearance, but unfortunately there is no way to make the lightweight Theme page open inside TB. Users who wish to try TB 60 can download the Release Candidate 3 installer here.
