How to fix Thunderbird crashes after exactly 5 minutes.
Hi,
My thunderbird installation crashes after exactly 5 minutes. I restart it and it crashes again after 5minutes. I may be writing an email or it is running in the background. I have been using thunderbird for years with no problem until now. I tried the following: 1. rebooted the computer 2. Run thunderbird in safe mode 3. Run it in windows safe mode 4. updated windows so it is current 5. reinstalled thunderbird 6. updated thunderbird to the latest version (52.8.0) 7. Rolled back to previous version of thunderbird (52.6.0) 8. Run it when not connected to the internet or any network 9 Disabled automatic email checking
Nothing has worked. It seemed to have started after upgrading to 52.7.0. It is strange that it crashes after exactly 5 minutes which made me think it was the auto email check but even with that disabled, it still crashes. Thunderbird has no problem downloading messages at startup or within the 5 minute run time. Even with the wifi switched off, it still crashes. I am running windows 10 on intel i7. I am using IMAP.
I would appreciate any help.

Sounds like a computer graphics failure. Mentions your graphics card nvidia geforce gtx 965m; version 21.20.16.4550; "driverDate":"11-11-2016"
See if your graphics driver needs updating.
Hi Toad,
Thanks for your reply. I checked to see if the driver needs updating but it seems I have the latest graphics driver. I just disabled hardware acceleration (in thunderbird options) but it still crashed after 5 minutes.
Could it be something else?

I have not always submitted a report everytime it crashed - thought it would swamp the Mozilla developers. But I have submitted a good number of them as you can see.
Appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks
And with a crash Id comes a bug. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1317066
Are you using the experimental maildir storage?
Yes. I am. I thought it would be better since I have quite large email folders and had previously noticed with mbox that older emails would get "lost" ie I could see the subject lines etc in search results but there would be no body. Even if I rebuilt the folders etc. So I thought this would be prevented with maildir. And from what I could see on the web, there weren't many reports of problems - I guess I missed this one!
It did work well for about 2 months so I did not think it was the issue. Only after I upgraded did it start.
I noticed this was reported 2 years ago. Are the developers still working on maildir in thunderbird?
Hopefully I will not have to wait long for the bug to be fixed as Im not sure how easy it will be to go back to mbox.
Thanks Matt for your help.
The reporter of that bug is a regular on this forum. Zenos is his tag here.
I will drop him a line and see if he has anything to add here.
Thanks Matt. Appreciate it.
