I want Firefox to ask me where to save downloaded files. In previous versions, Firefox would suggest different folders for different file types, based on my previous selection. E.g. it would suggest "My Pictures" for .jpg files, and "Desktop" for .exe (because that is where I normally place these).

However, Firefox 29 ALWAYS suggests the folder that was last used, regardless of the filetype. How can I get back the old behavior?

I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and
add-ons were changed / reset. Try this; Start Firefox in Safe Mode
While you are in safe mode;
Firefox Options > Advanced > General.
Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Then check ALL of your settings. Browser and add-ons. Then restart.

But wouldn't that mean that there is a setting for this...? I can't see how Safe Mode could possibly change this..

Did you read my question? This was a built-in feature in earlier versions of Firefox and none of the mentioned add-ons solve my problem.

I am NOT interested in fixed folders (or even having to select something), all I want is to have the old logic back.

Based on the website and filetype (or only one of them?), Firefox would almost always suggest the right download folder.

If there is a problem in Safe Mode, that tells us something. If the problem returns after restarting, that tells us something else.
