Mozilla didn't fire Brendan. Brendan made his own decision to step down as CEO and leave the company as he felt the impact from social media was doing more harm than good and preventing him from fulfilling his duties as CEO.

As an insider, I can say that it's not as bad as the media makes it seem. Mozilla is a diverse community of really awesome people who strive to make the Web a better place.

Brendan Eich resigned himself and said: “I have decided to resign as CEO effective April 3rd, and leave Mozilla. Our mission is bigger than any one of us, and under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader. I will be taking time before I decide what to do next.”
