FF24 Plays GIFs too fast
I had 23.0.1 and it auto-updated to 24 and GIF animations would not play at the correct speed. I installed 23.0.1 again but now it doesn't open, it just crashed. That's a WHOLE other issue I have created a seperate Ask about with no luck so far.
So since 23.0.1 seems not an option at the time, getting 24 working properly is the only one
I'm using Win7 64-bit
Here are two videos to show you the problem.
Clip 1 They go in sync at around 10seconds
Left: FF23.0.1 Windows Vista on my laptop now since I can't install FF23.0.1 on my computer anymore :( it just crashes Right: FF24 Windows 7 on my newish computer

Clip 2
This one goes in syn around 35sec
This one is Adobe Photoshop CS5 vs. FF24 This gif is at .03sec frame delay

If i open it in Preview on Adobe, it of course uses FF and will be fast I didn't bother, but Easy GIF Animator would stay in sync with Adobe. All applications stay in sync and are at the intended speed which only animates properly in 23.0.1. Its isolated to the browser in FF24
Also, I've had to use Chrome and it also seems to play GIFs fast.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
- Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
Hi thank you, I turned off hardware acceleration and it did not help I started it Safe Mode and it did not help
You've been trying to help me on two topics I've posted and I am very grateful to you for that.
Its either fix 24 to plays GIFs at normal speed or fix whatever is causing 23 to not crash.
I am worried I'll have to do a complete system restore just for the browser. And then I'll still only be using 23
Can you post a link to a few GIF images that aren't working for you?
Hi, thank you for your reply.
This problem is not specific to any GIFs. It happens with ALL gif animations on 24. Regardless of what site they're posted on. Its specific to the browser, so I could post any GIF animation
Please observe this gif since its more relevent with the videos I made:
gif frame delay is .03secs http://31.media.tumblr.com/c70cbf0fe9d749c29a7aef11e4808c32/tumblr_mr6pflXX491r1mhs0o1_400.gif
If you look at the first post when I opened this topic, you'll notice I also posted links to two Youtube videos (with time when they are appear in sync) that show that FF24 animates GIFs faster than any software app or 23.0.1
Thank you for any help you can offer me. Please check out those two videos I posted to get a better idea of what i'm dealing with. thanks again!
I can't see the difference in speed between the GIFs in your videos. They are slightly off from one another, but seem to be playing at approximately the same speed.
When I visit the Tumblr link, I see approximately the same frame rate in Firefox 24 and Google Chrome, both faster than IE8. The delay of 0.03 is below the minimum delay in IE8, so it is rounded up to 0.1 seconds. (This page from 2012 indicates this still is the case with newer versions of IE: Nullsleep | Jeremiah Johnson - Animated GIF Minimum Frame Delay Browser Compatibility Study.)
I tested with hardware acceleration disabled. Because a restart is required after switching this, I haven't tested with hardware acceleration enabled.
Thank you for your help
If you watch the videos at the time I indicated when they were in sync (10sec for the first one, 35sec for the 2nd) you'll see them being very close to being in sync and then notice the FF24 animation get ahead eventually showing it is faster
I do notice a lot of frames dropping out on my system for whatever reason, so the GIF looks very jerky and when Firefox is "catching up" it may be making errors in computing how far it needs to jump ahead in the frame queue.
FF24 Win Vista on my POS lasptop vs FF24 Win7
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEuWtUmjFd0
In sync around from the beginning is to around 10sec
Different GIF:
The movements are less pronounced, but its got less frames, so its easier-ish to notice the difference
In the next two videos of 24 on Vista vs 7 you'll see that one GIF animation is much smaller because its on an old laptop and increaing the zoom in firefox would make it lag the animation
i know this seems like im knitpicking at nothing but on a lot of gifs its very prevelant in how the entire animation displays also its driving me nuts haha :s
Does it have any effect if you set image.mem.decodeondraw to false?
Just tested and no :\ nuts i got really hopeful there.
i'm beginning to wonder if this is a Win7 thing. I do want 23.0.1 back since it doesnt occur on that ver of ff. which is another topic how it wont open anymore. im worried i'll have to do a system restore to install it again without it crashing
What is the CPU load when you display this GIF image?
I see a spike on one of the CPU cores every 20 sec.
Thanks for testing this our further.
I'm not as well versed in computers to know exactly what that means.
Windows Task Manager shows the CPU Performance bounce from 4%/5% to 10% every few seconds regardless if the GIF is running or not
I've got 2 FF windows open with one and two tabs open respectively, as well as iTunes
Neither having more or less applications running affects performance of the GIF animation. And also you observed a spike with this one gif. This problem of fast GIFs is not isolated to any particular GIF. It is on ALL Gif animations through the FF24 browser.
Again, I'm not very well versed in this stuff, but I can only deduce this is how my computer and Windows 7 interacts with FF24
