why won't my bookmarks side menu automatically pop up when I start firefox

Most times when I start Firefox the Bookmarks side menu does not automatically pop up, and I must start it almost every time.

The Bookmarks Sidebar isn't supposed to open when Firefox is started. But, if it is open when you close Firefox, it should be open the next time you start Firefox.
