Every so often my security software gives me an alert stating that Firefox is trying to act as an Internet server. It then asks me if I want to allow or deny it server rights. Why does Firefox need to do this and is it safe to allow it?

A long time ago, ZoneAlarm used to do that, but they fixed it on their end. Are you using ZA? If so, is it the latest version?

Hi,

No I'm not running ZA but a program from F-Secure. Not sure why Firefox needs to act as a server, I connect and surf fine. I also get Mozilla upgrade alerts without a problem.

In ZA: local server = no (disallow) OOPS! EDITED internet server = no (disallow)

Few programs need internet server access; but be careful, a few definitely do! Ask on your Firewall publisher/developer site and/or forums.

Hi,

I'm sorry am I on the wrong forum? That's exactly my question, why does Mozilla need server rights and is it safe to allow it?

Firefox uses a loop back connection to communicate with the Software Security Device (passwords and secure connections). Some firewalls interpret that as Firefox being as server.
