Is Firefox 40.0.3 ignoring the Preferences file for videos?
I have a slow internet connection and use Firefox to get the youtube URL then copy/paste to youtube-dl to download the file. I watch it offline. This has worked ok until firefox 40.0.3. It appears to be ignoring the "always ask" preference and starts playing the video immediately.

YouTube may have switched Linux users to its newer HTML5 player, which doesn't use Flash. If you right-click the player, you should get a short context menu. The last line of the short context menu should indicate whether it's the HTML5-based player or the Flash-based player. Or if you get Firefox's regular context menu, it's not Flash.
Short term workarounds:
(1) Use the Flash Control extension to stop HTML5 video (and Flash video) from auto-playing
(2) Force YouTube to serve Flash instead of HTML5. There are a couple add-ons for that. Either of them will do, you don't need both:
- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/youtube-flash-video-player/
I have heard these don't work for YouTube embedded on other sites.
